GRAD702 – Week 09

Waves, The evolution of the Chinese characters

Updates

  • The Monday class was cancelled. RIP the Queen.
  • Our prototype section is postponed to next week so that we can have an extra week to work on our project, and refine the design with this week’s feedback from tutors and the focus group.
  • The feedback session for me is on Tuesday.
  • After gaining feedback, I began to plan for more expiration into other techniques of making, such as foiling, and I’ve emailed bindery but have yet to get a response; I am planning to make a pop-up session on Friday.

Class activities

In the class this week, we sorted into small groups for focus meetings and feedback giving. before this session, I was allocated to an all-Chinese student group, which certainly helped with validating the design and seeing if it was functional for people of identical cultures. However, it wouldn’t be much helpful for everyone else. Thus, I applicated in the fact that I mixed up with other students with different backgrounds.

Poster/s

the wow factor from fellow designers leads me to understand what type of visual people are interested in the most. – Poster. And the feedback was okay, which did point out some interesting things that I’ve never considered, for example, the use of colour and blocking – which is treating the elements as a block and arranging them accordingly.

The feedback from the tutor is mostly focused on crafting methods and experimentation. I need to try out more print methods, such as foiling and screenprint. which I have never done before, and I didn’t know that foiling is something that could be done without spending a ton of money. So I looked into more on the subject.

Binding & Paper choice

At this stage, I am sure that my binding will be perfect binding, but not yet decided if I want to make it hardcover or not. I do like the premium feel that the hardcover gives, but at the same time, it loses some flexibility. On Friday, I will try both methods and see which one results the best.

UPDATE:

After testing with the paper stock I chose, the hardcover binding is not going to work, as the cover required a heavy bend on the edges, and my stock is not cooperating, and when I tried to bend it, it tore apart. And I not planning to change the paper for my cover; thus, I only have one option left. a perfect bind with heavier cover paper and my stock is 200+GSM paper, so I think I am good.

I also found this type of RAW paper with edges that look very nice, I think I might be able to make it a frame and put the content inside.
