Technological solution to design
Problem
The issue during my design of the posters and publication was validation. I won’t know which layout is considered to be more effective before peers’ feedback, and it requires many trials. And this could delay the design process. It might not be necessary for an experienced designer as they have been putting years of work into making design. But for me, as a new designer who values the time investment, I wondered if there is a way to understand how the eye sees when browsing a piece of work.
Eye-tracking
Thanks to the studio where I did my internship with. They have got some tech that was new to me, an eye-tracking technology that could visually show where the eyes focus on. They use it to quantify the design effectiveness. And I was stable to leverage the tool into my design.
Testing
With the new tool I got, I put all of the poster design into testing and see the result. Then, with the guide of the tool, I made some mirror tweaks on the posters. Most of them are adjusting the space between graphics and title.
Refinement
Besides using the new tool to micro-adjust the layout, I also changed the message box border according to the feedback, making them rounded to fit the brand cute and cuddle language.
Testing with different GSM
The first print I brought to the classroom for peer feedback was printed on 120 GSM paper in textured and non-textured stocks. And I’ve got feedback from classmates saying they prefer to hold the publication on a heavier paper. I’ve also asked if they like textured or non-textured papers. And the result was textureless paper won the most people’s liking. I suppose it is due to the textureless paper rendering the colours brighter, therefore higher the contract for easier reading.
I went to Pinklime and did three more copies of the publication with different GSM paper to see the differences.
After testing with 120 GSM, 160 GSM, and 200 GSM paper, I found that from an easy to read perspective, 160 GSM make the most sense. It is not too light and flimsy to make the publication feel cheap and unprofessional, and also, it is not too rigid to hold and turn pages making reading difficult. Thus, I chose to use 160 GSM paper on textureless paper for my final handin.
Presentation - Before & After
Before
We have gone through at least three times of rehearsals and still have not been able to cut the time in 10 minutes. We were thinking speed up the video to free up some time, but the result was not good. Therefore, we turn to cutting down the time for the team speech. Each of us has an extremely narrow time frame to go through. I only got 1 minute and 30 seconds to go through 6 slides. We have cut down everything we can, and we have to live with the fact that we are going to be over 10 minutes.
After
The presentation went worst than we thought. Cherry’s video is not playing is definitely the worst thing that could’ve happened as it was one of the core elements of the project. Some of us got stage fright during the presentation, and the timing got out of control. We should have also gone through testing on the presentation computer beforehand to ensure the PowerPoint was working as expected. However, after the class, I got back from Yiran, and she said we tested it before the presentation, and it was working fine, but somehow it broke during the presentation. So I guess we should have made at least one backup plan for the presentation in case of a situation like this happen. But, look at the bright side. We’ve gone through everything and do present in the nicest way possible.
To do next
- Group report
- Brand system & guideline
- Final print & handin
