我能解决 幕后与过程 媒体与材料动画短片

I Can Solve It / Material and Media

This short animation is aim to raise a question on our way of treating our waste. It is illogical, perfectly useable things have not been used wisely. Garbage has not been well sorted. These seem to be a small things, but this inappropriate hobby could bring an ecological effect to the global environment. It is time to act.

This is a year 2 university project, and the following materials are detailing the rationale behind decisions, process and deliverables.

I’ll be using After Effect, Premiere, Photoshop, Blender and Substance Designer in this project.

Ideology

意向

In my apartment building, I found where a lot of mixing garbage in the bin, seems no one cares the label on the bin. I curious is that just happen in this building or it is a border phenomenon. I asked some of my friends to investigate how people process their garbage in their building. And the result is basically the same.

选题原因

I think it is important to wake awareness of classification. The current offer from the city council is not as valid. People are most likely to toss their garbage together for convenience. The reasons that I could think of is till lag of advertising. Most of the trash will be sent to the landfill and buried Which a dangerous move because not all the waste can be breakdown over a short period of time. Plastic, for example, it takes over 1000 years to decompose. It’s not only harmful to the environment, but also the incused the disposal cost.

I’m going to show the audience a visual story, none-dialogue, with a representation of reality, and a sense of involvement.

Simplify, Stylised 3D animation (low poly) with somewhat realistic texture and elements.

The younger generation, age group between 14-28

Consider the length of the film, it will be better to use it as an advertisement. Places like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram.

Research

字体选择

In order to create a realistic sign, I did some research on what font used on highway signs. And came back with highway gothic. The font is easy to read. Which great for this project, because the time is fairly limited.

On the City Council website, there is documentation that describes how to manage the waste.  but in real life, people just don’t seem to care that much. One of the reasons that I could think of is the document itself. Reading is not a very effective way to get the message across. Thus I think animation is a relatively affected media to get the message around. And when I was researching into the topic and came across a YouTube ad, that oddly enough just happened to match what I just search 30 minutes ago.  but in this case, I’m actually glad The algorithm is actually doing a decent job lead me straight to the Auckland Council channel. and coincidentally, there was a recent upload about waste management. so it actually supported my topic. That this a relevant issue.

Government info

Waste generation and disposal in New Zealand

http://www.mfe.govt.nz/publications/environmental-reporting/waste-generation-and-disposal-new-zealand

The estimated composition of landfill waste in New Zealand:
Organic matter 39%.
Paper 19%.
Construction and demolition waste 17%.
Potentially hazardous 8%.
Plastic 7%.
Metal 6%.
Glass 2%.
Other 5%.
Source: Ministry for the Environment (1997)

Just over half the litter is paper (53 percent) and a quarter is plastic (26 percent). The remainder is divided among metal (6 percent, half of it cans), glass (4 percent), and a miscellany of items, such as wood, ice cream sticks, food scraps, tyres, rubber items, clothing and construction material. The metal and glass proportions have declined significantly over the decade, while the plastics proportion has expanded. Much of the paper, plastic, metal and glass litter comes from discarded packaging, particularly food and drink containers.

One way of reducing the amount of waste at landfills is to increase the fee for dumping it. A 1993 study of local authorities’ waste reduction initiatives found that disposal fees at landfills tend to be lower than the costs of landfill maintenance or expansion (Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, 1993). As a result, landfilling is seen as the cheap and convenient option in many cities and districts. The relationship between dumping fees and landfill waste volumes is shown in a 1993 comparison of four New Zealand cities (see Figure 3.14). Where fees are higher, businesses and householders have a greater incentive to produce less waste-or to dispose of it in other ways.

Millions of pizza boxes needlessly sent to landfill

Public Place Recycling Scheme (PPRS) research found half of those surveyed threw their pizza boxes in the bin not knowing they could be recycled.

That means about 26 million boxes a year – almost 3000 tonnes of cardboard – are being hurled into landfills needlessly.

Movie reference

Wreck-It Ralph – 2012

I got the gameplay style idea from the 2012 Disney animated film Wreck-It Ralph. I got my Catchphrase from the movie Wreck-It Ralph. There a scene in the movie where every time fix-it Felix the Games started Felix will say “I can fix it!” So I borrow the idea of “I can “something” it.”  And switch with the word to solve, hint the title I can solve it.

Ready Player One – 2018

The wasteland, Heavy industrialised looking style on 2018 film Ready Player one.

Story

To tell the story, have an outline. The story is about recycling waste. Using a high-contrast environment, heavy foggy dark kind of thing. In the film, I place the gameplay style at the start and turn down to reality instantly.

There’s also an irony scene in the film, the advert on the truck says “GREENEST CITY AWARD”. Play with the political aspect, local interest and the lies.

Storyboarding

I am thinking of using two main scenes in this project, one is the city scene, and one is the landfill scene. The first scene is the gameplay scene cam pan from the sky down to the subject and revived the title. And most of the cut scene will be hard cut, to achieve the instant look. And after rough edit, and I found some shots are not necessary for the film so I cut them out. To make the storyline more compact and fluent. I marked out the scene number and shot number to time myself, and also help with camera placement. Make it easier for me to work in Blender.

Rough layout

After storyboarding, I make a rough layout of the film in After Effect and Premiere, the idea of a rough layout is basically a moving storyboard. The aim is to time the scene and tests the overall structure of the film. Because it is easier to make, so it is also a great way to experiment with all the changes before finalised.

Concept

The idea of concept art is to try out different elements before moving on to modelling. It provides a visual solution to help solve the problems. Here is an example; I draw a dozer with two sets of moving methods and try out which one is easier to model or show the movement. Asking for feedback is also important at this stage, there are a lot of changes might happen. After that, I started piecing out the moodboard for references.

Environment

City scenes

At this point, changes in different colour/lighting are expected.

Colour node in Blender

Blender 2.8 Alpha version with EEVEE optimised Render node

In this stage, I need to think of what the scenes are going to be, and kind of emotion I want to create.

Modelling

When I had the rough layout and worked down the concept arts, is time to model the necessary character out. In this project, I’ll be using Blender for all the modelling, animation and Environment. I’m currently running on version 2.8 beta. It is the most time-consuming part of the project, it is easy to overwork on a single object. In this case, I layer out all the object according to their appearance in the film, if something is going to be shot up close, I’ll pay more attention to it, if something is far in the background, I’ll pay less attention to it.

Surface art

Surfacing is taking the untextured, raw model and texture it, in this project, I gave them two different sets of properties. One for the gameplay scene and one for the other. Texturing a model is not only like gove it a colour, things like plastic and metal, have different look and feel, how to achieve the realistic representation of a material is essential. In the end, with some final touch of rust and dust give the model more a bit more realistic appearance. I’m using substance designer for this. Substance Designer is an application used to create base textures. It is a node-based interface where you connect one node to another to create a texture. It’s simple, powerful and procedural.

Animation

After texturing the objects, is time to animate them. It’s fairly similar to after effect with timeline and keyframing. In my process, I’ll place down all the main model and animate them first. After that, I’ll animate the support elements like particle and collision. And final, props animation, stuff like the could and the sun.

Environment displacement

Next step, environment displacement. Which basically means adding more stuff to your scene to make it more believable or enhance the atmosphere. You wouldn’t expect a major street without lights and trees.

Editorial

The final step. Editing. Adding VFX, music and title. All the fun stuff. Whit some careful fixed of the rendering glitch.
