This is a 3 minutes short film use reversed filming technique upon with other camera movements to showcase the world that we know can be stranger and post a new experience to the audience.

Synopsis

The film itself is not about telling a story; it is more of an experience, to show the audience that the world and time we are in can be viewed in a different. So that the viewer could can out a unique understanding of the film. The style of the film will be coloured and colour graded. I wanted to show the real world that we can relate to, the atmosphere of the movie is set to warm and energetic. Establishing a wide-angle shot that shows the place on a broader scale and then slowly zooms into a specific area. This technique repeats at the start of each location. Film will start with the title which in this film called “TIME”, the opening will last about 5 seconds then fade-out to the next scene. As the title fade-out, I bring the locations in, one by one, give each location around 5 second to lead the audience, here is the place that the fun things are going to happen. There will be no more than 5 locations in the final production, so after introducing all locations which less than 25 seconds the movement in the film will slow down and eventually stopped. After a second or so, the film started to reverse. Reverse to the first location, camera showing a wild top angle looking downward to the city for 5 seconds. Then the camera jump cuts to the next location where I’m implementing hyperlapse while I’m walking down the queen street, this shot will remain for 5 to 8 seconds. Next, I apply Dolly zoom for several wild angle scenes such as Aotea Square, sky tower, and AUT campus. Also, I’ll be controlling the shutter speed to manipulate a certain emotion, such as faster shutter for morning scenes to enhance the busyness of the city and creates a crystal clear, sharp motionless image, or slow the shutter creates a smoother dreamy sensation with more motion blur. In the last scene, the film will again slow down and stop for a second, then the movie playback normally, with a jump cut to a quiet coast with fewer people and screen slowly turns black, then the credit rolls for around 10 seconds and slowly turns back screen. In the editorial, music will guide the cuts, I am using the rhythm of the music to help ease out the cuts, make them less noticeable and awkward. In addition, combined with some ambient sound to create depth. The film does not focus on telling a clear, understandable story; instead, it will try to communicate via moving imagery and gives the audience a sensory sensation, along with that, hopefully brings a different perspective and thinking to time.

Treatment

The film is an experimental film, and the main goal is to challenge our perception of time. I like the short film by JT Singh, A Mind-Bending Walk Through Shanghai and posted on national geographic. The film uses the same reverse technique. I like how they used different camera position to showcase the city, there is also aerial cinematography implemented in the film make it more engaging. In the film, there are several more techniques that I’d like to try out. One is with a figure walking backwards filming, and then playback in reverse it will look like they walk forward. Second is part of the screen plays normally, and then another part of the screen plays in reverse or slow motion. I’d also wanted to try out some of the technique we learn from last semester the film project, overlapping footage and plays them at a different speed.

Ideology

I am fascinated by time, and how most of us feel the time is passing in a linear way from one direction and going forward. That gives me an idea, what it would feel like if the time going backwards. Would the environment, the motion, our perception toward objects be shifted into total chaos? The film is not going to answer that question, instead, the question will waiting for the audience to respond.

Locations

The core locations

AUT city campus, Aotea Square, Albert Park, Queen Street, Britomart, Remuera Train Station.

Secondary locations

Myers Park, Newmarket, Mount Eden, Potters Park, Dominion Rd, Auckland Domain.

Tertiary locations

One Tree Hill, Devonport Beach, Takarunga, Stokes Point Reserve.

Although there are a lot of locations listed, however in the final film, only five will be in the short to limit the distraction. The listed location needs an investigation in order to determine if they are meet the criteria.

locations criteria

Most of them located in places where is a lot of movement, people waking, car driving etc. Because it is important for this film to have visual interest.

Sound Design

Ambient sound

In the film, environment sounds are used for indicating an environment that happens on the screen, such as car driving by, people talking, and water flowing. The sound will play normally, and only at the start of a new location, such as changing from indoor to outdoor. The level of ambient audio implemented in the film will be 6dB or lower than the music to prevent distraction. The ambient sound ideal playtime is 5 seconds, and it will be adjustable in the editorial.

Foley

In the short, foley function similar to the ambient sound. To brief the audience about the location or event on the screen, they will be played normally. The sound profile will mostly be the same, fade-in at the start and quickly boosted to around 6dB or lower than the music, then fade-our slowly. Each foley plays about 5-10 seconds.

Music

The music used in the film called Epic, it has a strong rhythm, the flow is engaging and the pace is suitable for my short.
